HIPS
HIPS filaments for 3D printing
HIPS filament as a support material for FDM 3D printers, one of the 3D threads used as a soluble support in complex prints.
HIPS is a high impact polystyrene (High Impact PolyStyrene) and is often used as a support material. It is a copolymer with the hardness of polystyrene and the elasticity of rubber. The material is often used for packaging and containers such as CD cases.
In the world of 3D printing, its use is mainly used in combination with ABS in dual extruder 3D printers. The filaments in HIPS can be dissolved in limonene. Only the ABS molded part will remain. No post-production is required for media removal.
HIPS therefore allows the printing of substrates soluble in D-limonene (lemon-based solvent). This dissolution takes a few hours.
HIPS filament: resistant and soluble support
How to use HIPS filament for 3D printing? For 3D printers with 2 extruders, the first print head houses the ABS and the second the HIPS. The ABS will print the prototype and the HIPS filament will print the support or support structures for complex or cantilevered parts. Once the print is complete, simply immerse the prototype in a solution of D-Limonene to make the parts printed in HIPS material disappear.
