What are configurable mechanical components?

The display can work in 8 bit mode or in 4 bit mode; if it works in 8 bit mode, it can display the entire ASCII character set (capitalization, lowercase, and special characters), but requires 10 ports to use, while if it works in 4 bit mode it only uses 6 ports (4 for data , one for the selector and one to enable disabling the display).
